Omschrijving
Method and Practice is the first, specific attempt in art history at describing and commenting upon the so-called "drawing books", printed books from which young, prospective artists were supposed to learn how to draw and in which, contrary to the merely theoretical treatises, the pictorial component dominates. Method and Practice is a revised English edition of a dissertation in Dutch from 1979, that was privately published by the author in 300 copies. In the present book the accessibility of the text has been improved upon by the inclusion of a register of names and of more than 250 illustrations.Method and Practice consists of comprehensive bibliographical descriptions of the drawing books published in the Netherlands up to ca. 1750, and of a commentary that demonstrates the relations between the pictorial instruction in the drawing books on the one hand, and contemporary art theory on the other. This commentary also discusses and illustrates the connections between the majority of European drawing books of the same period.
