Modern brown half calf over marbled boards, flat spine with green and blue moroccan spine labels, gilt ruling and lettering and animal decorations. Illustrated with 65 engraved plates by Maradan, including a frontispiece and engraved title to each volume. Bindings show some minor rubbing at extremities. Text and plates in good condition with light scattered foxing. Very nice set.

The highly original and amusing engraved plates make this work one of the most entertaining natural-histories of its period. Some four hundred and thirty species of fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds are described, sixty-five of which are illustrated, with many of the animals shown in little scenes or less than natural settings (the orangutan is having a cup of tea, for example).
