Second enlarged edition of this classic on naval architecture. Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) was a French physician, botanist and naval engineer. He devoted most of his working life to the field of vegetable physiology. For many years he was inspector general of the marine, where he used his scientific knowledge to improve naval construction.

Contemporary calf binding, spine on 5 raised bands with gilt decorations and lettering, marbled endpapers, red edges. Binding slightly rubbed at the edges and corners, some light foxing to the first pages, marginal tear to pages VII-X, last few quires slightly damp stained. Overall fine and clean copy.
